  • Black Chrome Sidecar Grandslam

Competitor interest in the upcoming Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam Series is at unprecedented levels, according to tournament organiser, Full Throttle Promotions. The rider nominations for the season-opening event at Kurri Speedway on Saturday night, November 16, exceeds thirty teams, thus providing organisers with an outstanding talent pool from which to pick the final field of sixteen.
“We have been inundated with rider interest from all over the world,” said series spokesperson Dave Parker.

“All the top teams from around Australia, as well as teams from England and New Zealand have nominated for the opening round at Kurri and race fans can be guaranteed a show the likes of which they have never seen before.

“The sport’s best sidecar teams are nominating for series rounds at record levels, due firstly to the obvious prestige of taking part in the Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam as well as capitalising on the excellent television coverage the event has attracted on the Speed Channel (Foxtel & Austar).

“Unfortunately we can only select sixteen teams, plus two reserves, so it will not be possible to give everyone a start. Our objective is to provide fans with the best field possible at all rounds and based on the rider interest we have received from around Australia, New Zealand, England and even America so far, achieving this objective will not be a problem. I would like to thank all riders that have expressed an interest in taking part,” Parker concluded.

The opening round at Kurri is likely to feature local stars such as Grant Bond/Glenn Cox, Hayden Bond/Brady Cox, Stephen Saunders/Clarissa Mitchell, Mick Farrell Jnr/Shane Van Ginneken, to name just some, against the best teams from a round Australia and the world.

“It’s a little too early to confirm the exact line-up at this time but we will certainly be doing so in coming weeks,” Dave Parker added.

“I expect the final rider line-up will be announced no later than mid-October. Former national champions Russell Mitchell and Mark Drew have expressed interest and should they confirm their availability then they will automatically be seeded into the event.”

Guaranteed a starting birth are the two English teams comprising Mick Cave/Ben Goddard and Mark Cossar/Darryl Whetstone as well as Kiwi husband and wife team, Andrew Buchanan and Philippa Burns from Palmerston North. Also, an additional English rider, Matt Tyrell is looking likely to take part in several rounds, including Kurri.

Two top teams from Queensland; Brodie Cohen/Cal Campbell and Stuart Firth/Yolanda Wilkinson will be lining up on November 16 as will heavy hitter, reigning World Champion and seven times national champion Darrin Treloar. Other members of the sport’s elite including; Mick Headland/Paul Waters and Warren Monson/Matt Morgan are also definite starters.
Defending Sidecar Grand Slam Champions, Mark Plaisted and Sam Gilbert will launch the defence of their crown at Kurri in what will be one of the most competitive meetings staged in the long history of Australian speedway sidecar racing.

Meanwhile, in other news, it has been announced that a special one hour TV show, dedicated to previewing this season’s Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam Series, will be screened on the Speed Channel’s popular Chequered Flag program on Wednesday night, November 13 at 8.30pm EST. The sixty minute special, hosted by David Tapp, will be recorded at the workshop of reigning World Champion, Darrin Treloar, thus providing viewers with a unique insight into the behind the scenes operation of the greatest sidecar rider the sport has ever produced.
“The special TV show will preview the Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam Series in detail and viewers will get to see the workshop operation of the current World Champion,” said Chequered Flag host and executive producer David Tapp.

“We will take viewers on a tour of Darrin’s race shop and produce numerous technical features on the bikes, engines and chassis set-up as well as re-live some of the great moments of the Sidecar Grand Slam over the last couple of years. The timing of the show is perfect, given that it will be screened nationally a few days before the opening round is being held at Kurri on November 16,” Tapp concluded.

Meantime, the opening round of the Series, from Kurri Speedway, will be the subject of a one hour highlights TV show screening on Speed (Chequered Flag) on Wednesday night, 11 December, 2013. The full television schedule for the Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam will be released in coming weeks.
